I think you're thinking about his pick short-term. You're thinking he was picked just for this year. He's not going to be a starter. He's going to be a guy they can draw up some packages for and get some speed and size into their secondary. I don't think they ever want to be in a position where they have to put a guy with Gunter's speed on Julio Jones. This is the type of player they want for their future. They tried athletic guys with not much corner experience and it didn't work. Now they've got a corner who's a corner and a safety who's a safety in today's NFL.
Alvin Kamara went to the Saints, by the way.
Incidentally, a lot of those pass rushers are still on the board. Willis has not been taken yet.
This is a really deep draft for RBs and it's smart not to expend high picks on them when the league is full of guys who aren't high draft picks (see Jordan Howard). They can get a back tomorrow and it won't be too late. They need help on defense. I don't see how you can complain about that.
Jordan Willis just went to the Saints.
I'm going to take a minute to update the board.
Anzalone went to the Saints. He's now off the board.
I don't think so. There's obviously a problem with him. I don't think he's the kind of guy Thompson brings into his locker room.
Tim Williams just went to the Baltimore Ravens.
They might be, but I wouldn't count on it. Guys rarely just all of a sudden become players. He's a really good special teams player and deserves more opportunities to play, but there's a reason he wasn't drafted.
I don't think they can get an impact guy. I think they can get someone who could complement Matthews, Perry and Fackrell. But really great pass rushers mostly come from the first round. The others take time to develop.
I think he's thrilled to have two big, fast DBs. Trust me on that one.
Bridgewater, Bradford, Kahlil, Cordarelle Patterson, too.
Basham goes to the Colts and Moreau goes to Washington.
