Thompson: Felt today went good. Things fell we thought were advantageous to us, especially over the next couple days.
Thompson: We have the first pick tomorrow and first pick on Saturday. For now.
Thompson on pick tomorrow: I don't have that answer. There were lots of things going on at the end. I'd like to look at that board some more
Thompson: We thought the board was strong enough to support it (the trade).
Thompson: You could tell tonight that the board was pretty strong at the end and we felt good about where we were.
Thompson: Very good strategy-wise (first pick Friday). It could be we highlight a player and take him or a team sees opportunity to trade up
Thompson: Maybe it's a trade that works for us.
Thompson on Watt: Great player. Other than that, I don't talk about players on other teams. Good for him.
Thompson: I thought (first round) flowed well. There were still players towards the end of the day. That always surprises you a little bit.
Thompson: Our guys were doing a lot of work seeing if there was a team want to go into a partnership with us (up or down).
Thompson on choices: In this instance, you're zeroing in on 3 or 4 guys. But the board held up strong. So we felt pretty good about it.
Thompson on reaction in draft room: Everybody, we talked about it. We wanted to add some meat and shore up the roster.
Thompson: The board is still strong. Who knows what will happen tomorrow.
Thompson on shopping the pick: Yes. You can go ahead and say that. That will save us some calls.
So, here's what I took out of what Thompson had to say.
1. He feels this is a very strong draft and he feels he needs some volume to beef up his team. He needs it at a number of positions and he's going to come out of this draft with a lot of picks.
2. The way teams went after quarterbacks allowed him to see the three or four players he really had his eye on fall toward the end of the round, so much so that he felt he could get an equal pick at 33 as at 29.
3. He really wants to shop that 33rd pick. He thinks someone is going to be desperate for that pick, maybe the Jets or the Jaguars or San Francisco. Both the Jets and 49ers need quarterbacks. He probably feels he can suck some good picks out of them.
I think it comes down to him, Cook or Mixon that teams will be shopping for.
So, looking at the board tomorrow, players who were thought to be first-rounders are Forrest Lamp,Dalvin Cook, Kevin King, Cam Robinson, Sidney Jones.
I think the safer pick is King.
The top of the second round last year was not impressive.
Cleveland took Emmanuel Ogbah, Tennessee took DE Kevin Dodd, Dallas took LB Jaylon Smith, Jacksonville took Myles Jack,
I'm updating the first round listing right now.
Thompson said his guys were up there on the phone. They're going to be fielding calls tonight and all day tomorrow, looking to get the best deal.
Incidentally, if you had 3 hours and 34 minutes in the pool for how long the first round would last, you won.
